Addressing the needs of each pupil
Students have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each student. A school’s careers programme should embed quality and diversity considerations throughout.
- A school’s career programme should actively challenge stereotypical thinking and raise aspirations
- Schools should keep systematic records of the individual advice given to each student and subsequent agreed decisions
- All students should have access to these records to support their career development
- Schools should collect and maintain accurate data for each student on their education, training or employment destinations for at least 3 years after they leave the school
Practise in School
- Pupils individual needs are addressed and support is provided throughout their school life to raise aspirations through weekly lessons and 1:1 visit with our career advisor.
- We offer coaching opportunities with our Enterprise Advisors
- All pupils will have an EHCP plan, so that there is a multi-agency approach to job exploration and transition support.
- Transition to post 16 is tailored to individual students, and parents and carers are fully involved in the process. Where necessary, transport will be supported by the career’s advisor.
- Our school develops vocational subjects to support individual needs and abilities.
- Career pathways and options are identified and explored depending on pupils’ interests and requirements
- Opportunities for apprenticeships, work experience and further education are explored in detail.
- Our school collates accurate data for our pupils’ destinations for 3 years after the pupils have left.
- Careers advisors continue to contact pupils who have left and support where necessary
- A wide range of employers and past students are welcomed into school to discuss career paths and choices.
