During the visit for the Army team the year 10&11 classes looked at the different jobs looked at the range of career opportunities within the British Army. Pupils engaged in this and showed great interested in a career within the army. Cpl Donaldson showed the class a presentation on a range of apprenticeship roles on offer from the Army Logistics and support, engineering, intelligence and communications, Hr and finance, medical, music and combat all specialised training for each individual to gain great skills in to succeed within the army. Clp Donaldson spoke about his own experiences within the Army, the places he had been deployed to for pursue his job, he also spoke about how much fun soldiers can have on adventure training Kenya on Safari, Spain hill walking, Canada horseback mountaineering all paid in full by the army.

We looked at apprenticeships, the Army has over 40 different roles that provide training with full pay and other great benefits such as free dental and medical treatment, personal accommodation with 3 meals a day, they ensure your fit and provided for so you can do your job. We looked at the different routes into the Army the students now are aware of what they need to achieve to join up. The students could see first-hand they could join at 15 years and 7 months to Harrogate training camp where they can complete basic training with education alongside for 17 weeks then they move onto their own specialised trade. Skills required that Cpl Donaldson spoke about to the students was discipline and respect, this a so important to the Army as they provide a serve to the sovereign The King.

Activity

All the pupils were excited about the visit as prior to the visit, pupils discussed what they would like to find out. They wrote down at least three questions that they would like answered. They were very varied and most of the pupils managed to clearly read out their questions.

  • Where in the world can you be working?
  • Why did you want to be a Solider?
  • How much money do you make?
  • Can your family live with you abroad?

Cpl Donaldson answered all the pupils’ questions in detail, so that pupils had a clear understanding of what it might be like to work in the British Army.

Impact of the Visit

All the pupils enjoyed the visit, they were very inspired and were surprised at how many different types of careers options that are available.

After the presentation the students went outside and joined in with tasks that were set up for them that a solider may have to complete within their time in serve, carrying a bergen with items of kit inside, webbing and a weighted vest with helmet. The students were blindfolded and put trust in a team mate to get across a mine field great use of team building and working together, it them ended with an agility test of speed and endurance.
