Event: Visit to Fly by Nite Rehearsal Studio

Number of pupils attending: 2

Aim of the activity

  • 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
  • Increasing employer engagement
  • Raising industry sectors profiles and appeal to students

In order to give our students a better idea of the variety of careers that are accessible to them, we as a school have been inviting businesses to either come in a speak to our students or arranging visits for our students to visit them. Within Fly by Nite, they offer a range of job sectors in their industry from van and HGV drivers, technology specialists, IT skills, warehouse operatives, specialised rehearsal services and much more. This tour was intended to increase awareness by giving our students an up-close look at what it’s like to work in a company and allowing them to talk to the staff about their roles.

Background to the company

Fly By Nite’s specialised vehicles and dedicated drivers are trusted to deliver by the biggest names in the Music, Entertainment, Corporate and Exhibition industries. Their vast experience throughout the years has taken us to Europe, Iceland, Russia, Turkey, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Libya and North Africa. From 2015, Fly by Nite also offer the largest purpose-built studio in Europe, perfect for a range of projects such as band rehearsal, production space or rehearsal venue. They operate from an 8-acre site in the West Midlands and can offer state-of-the-art, temperature-controlled warehouse facilities of up to 4,100sqm (43,500sqft) for storage of Set and Theatre Props.

Activity

Both pupils had sperate visits at Fly By Nite at different times during the same day. The experience and outcomes were similar for the both of them.

We arrived at the visit site and got introduced to Scotti who is the studio manager and d would be showing us around. We went into the main rehearsal studio and got told about the range of jobs that they encounter at the site. The studio manager listed some of the job roles and talked about the scope of the different people working there. Both pupils engaged in conversations about the size of the teams they have working on different projects at the same time and what hours the staff work. The studio manager showed us the rooms that the staff stay in at the visit site and the catering area where meals are made. We got a tour of the rigging room with a high view of the original room we went into bellow us and the pupils listened to a description what the room is used for and how it works. We were shown a video of behind the scenes of a tv show which was filmed there and got to see some of the big teams of people working to make the set. They also explained what different jobs people had whilst collaborating on it and how they had utilised the space to create something that looked like a block of flats as a setting for the tv show.

Impact of activity

This was a great visit for all students and staff members, the studio was very accommodating and showed the students a range of different roles within their industry. It showed that there are many jobs within 1 industry that can be achieved through hard work.

Both students were engaged the entire time, and one has expressed a desire to work at Fly by Nite in the future. This visit seemed to have an inspirational impact on the pupils.

Quotes from the students.

RB- “I want to work there when I am older”, “Wow, this building is huge”.
CS- “I didn’t know that there were jobs like that”, “There are lots of lorries here”.
