Activity

A RAP (Year 11) student attended a Careers event at the Guildhall in Worcester. The event had an abundance of local employers, and the student was able to visit stands from most of them. The student was very interested with Young Adult Learning in particular, who offer support and traineeships, courses and supported internships for SEN students. He gathered information leaflets from them and asked some questions about post-16 pathways they offer. The pupil also took interest in Guide Dogs UK and spoke to the vendors about what his careers aspirations are, what qualifications he has been working towards whilst at school, and what post-16 options he is considering.

Impact of Activity

As the Careers fair had representatives from various sectors, such as finance, education, and retail, the student was able to see what is on offer and what he can build up to depending on his post-16 choice. He collected valuable resources from both employers and post-16 providers. The student took particular interest in the Young Adult Learning stand and talked to the employee there for a while. He asked a lot of questions about being there post-16 and how to visit it. The experience allowed the student to consider different pathways once he leaves school, depending on his interests.

Quotes from the Student

“That was interesting!”
“I wouldn’t like to work somewhere with a lot of people”
“It’s annoying that working with Guide Dogs is 18+”
“I am doing functional skills qualifications”

Teachers Feedback

The Careers fair was very informative for the pupil, and he was able to interact with several different employers. As there were SEN-targeted post-16 vendors, they were accommodating to the student and helped to make the experience less daunting. He was able to see different career sectors first-hand which has helped him on his pathway to choosing a suitable post-16 placement.
