P3 have carefully designed and made some excellent and vibrant Diya Lamps as part of our big question “What does it mean to be a Hindu in Britain today?”

Some of us even had a go at decorating the traditional way by using our fingers. In traditional Indian Diya painting, fingers are used to apply colours based on the symbolic representation of the five elements. The thumb represents the sky, the first finger represents air, the middle finger represents fire, the ring finger represents water, and the little finger represents earth. This symbolic use of fingers adds a unique cultural dimension to the Diya decoration.
