Riversides Literacy Showcase – Ghost Stories Edition!

This term, our Riversides Literacy Showcase was filled with thrills, chills, and plenty of creativity as pupils explored the theme of ghost stories across the school.

Year 3 and 4 based their experience on A Dark, Dark Tale by Ruth Brown. Pupils chose whether to listen to the story inside our atmospheric “dark cave” or enjoy it in the cosy classroom book corner. They then sequenced the events and retold the tale using expression, intonation, and their very best spooky voices!

Year 5 and 6 read The Hairy Toe by Daniel Postgate and took part in an exciting “hairy toe hunt” by following clues hidden around the classroom. They even created their own clay hairy toes to bring the story to life.

Year 8 explored ghost stories through guided reading, focusing on vocabulary used to build tension. Pupils wrote their own eerie stories and also played a hilarious game of “consequences,” producing mashed-up, silly ghost tales as a class for fun.

Year 9 read about a ghostly cavalier reportedly sighted in Worcestershire and took on a range of spooky tasks linked to this tale, using their oracy skills to discuss, question, and imagine the mysterious events.

It has been a wonderfully imaginative half term, filled with storytelling, creativity, and lots of excitement across the school!
