4. CEIAG in the Curriculum
Linking curriculum learning to careers
Why this matters?
Enabling young people to develop their career thinking whilst they are at school is often the best preparation for their future lives and employment. Teachers can be highly influential so can motivate pupils and discus their hopes and dreams.
Career-relevant learning improves young people’s motivation and engagement in learning.
All teachers link curriculum learning with careers.
- Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects’ teachers highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths.
- All subject teachers emphasise the importance of succeeding in English and maths.
School Practise
- Our school links careers to every subject where possible-maths-linked to finance or measurements, English-for self-presentation, completing applications/ CVs. Food Tec-for life skills and catering.
- Whole-school teaching and learning focuses on the relevance of subjects to everyday independent living, future learning and leisure, livelihood planning and employability skills.
- One size does not fit all. We create a personalised careers curriculum, working on pupils’ abilities and aspirations.
- We teach transferable careers skills on a daily basis. Organised thinking, meeting deadlines, persisting and being reliable.
- Our careers programme incorporates a broader curriculum of independent living, social skills, travel training-this could be through weekly lessons or through our D of E award.
- We tailor our approach and our Enterprise advisors may coach individual pupils to support their aims and goals
