Kingfisher Careers Fair

Event: Kingfisher careers fair.

Number of pupils attending: 2

Aim of the activity

Linking Gatsby Benchmark 1,2, 3, 4, 5.

Activity

2 RAP (Year 10) students attended an Inclusion Careers event at Kingfisher school. We visited stands from a variety of employers, colleges and other organisations. Students were particularly interested in Bankside college, Kidderminster college and young adult learning, who offer support and traineeships, courses and supported internships for SEN students. Students gathered information from the stands and spoke to vendors about what their careers aspirations are, what they plan to do after school, and what qualifications they have been working towards whilst at school.

Impact of activity

The students collected valuable resources and obtained written information from vendors. Even though it was overwhelming due to the number of vendors, stands and people, the students were able to engage in the careers fair due to adapting the length of the time slot given and accessing the fair at a quieter time.

One student took particular interest in the Kidderminster college stand and talked to the employee there for a while. The other student engaged well and took interest in Wildgoose Rural Training. He asked a lot of questions about being there post-16 and asked to visit it.

Quotes from the students.

‘I have done Entry Level 2 functional skills in English and Maths’
‘I don’t want to go to college but could go there even with no GCSE’S’
‘Can we go to Wildgoose?’
‘What do you do at Wildgoose?’

Teachers Feedback

The careers fair was very accommodating for the students who visited. The vendors there helped to make the experience less dauting. There was a great range of post-16 options to explore and both students got a good understanding of what’s on offer.
