As a school we have been encouraging businesses to either come and speak to our pupils or arrange visits for our pupils so that they have more of an understanding of a range of careers that could be available to them. Within Marshalls they offer a range of job sectors in their industry from mechanics, finance, IT skills, warehouse operatives, van and HGV drivers and much more. The aim of this visit was to raise awareness for our students to see firsthand what’s it’s like to work in a workplace and speak to the employees about their roles.

Background to the company

Marshall’s is a well-respected, family-run distribution and storage business. We employ approximately 70 people, and the business has been under its current ownership for more than 35 years. Delivering added-value solutions that are tailored to suit customers’ needs, our specialisms include the handling, distribution and storage of ambient temperature food products and moving abnormal loads. We then went into the warehouse and were able to see how the pallets were stored and moved by forklifts to the lorries for their destination. We moved around the yard with care due to large moving vehicles and spoke to the mechanics who explained their role and how they keep the transport running for the benefit of the company, they also expressed they are on call 24 hours a day due to transport being all over the country they need to get to it if they break down. The students then went and seen the finance and IT offices included in that was the transport team who monitor the drivers and where they need to be, this was very busy with lots of people talking on the telephones. amerchants, garden buildings, stable manufacture

Impact of activity

This was a great visit for all students and staff members, the company were very accommodating showing a range of job sectors within their industry. It showed that there are many jobs within 1 industry that can be achieved through hard work.

The students were engaged the entire time and a few of them have now shown an interest within the haulage transport sector.

Quotes from the students.

How do you know where the driver is?
Do they sleep in their lorries?
How many days a week do you work?
