Chapter Six: World Music Day

While World Music Day at Riversides School was full of instruments and rhythms, one of the most memorable parts of the day came when Gareth, our ever-enthusiastic music teacher, introduced a very special challenge – creating World Cup songs.

At first, there were a few puzzled looks. Writing songs? About football? But Gareth quickly got everyone excited, explaining how music and sport both bring people together from all over the world. Soon enough, the classrooms buzzed with ideas as students began thinking about teams, chants and what makes a great World Cup anthem.

Working in groups, pupils became real songwriters. Some started with catchy lyrics about their favourite countries, while others focused on making strong, rhythmic beats that sounded like they belonged in a packed stadium. There were claps, stomps, and plenty of laughter as groups tested out their ideas, sometimes changing things completely when something didn’t quite work.

Before long, each group was ready to perform. The classroom turned into a mini concert, with pupils proudly sharing their World Cup songs. Some were loud and energetic, with chants you could imagine echoing around a stadium, while others had clever lyrics and surprising melodies. A few even had actions to go with them, making it impossible not to join in.

Gareth’s World Cup songwriting session showed that music can be anything you want it to be. Whether inspired by instruments from around the world or the excitement of a global football tournament, students discovered that they could create something truly their own.

It was a brilliant part of World Music Day at Riversides School – one that brought together music, sport and imagination in a way that no one will forget.
