Overview of the activity

Riversides School is committed to supporting all pupils to achieve their full potential especially when researching career opportunities for individual students. This specific visit was aimed at encouraging students to be aware of how post 16 options within college can be completely different to school.

Through this, we were:

  • Raising students’ aspirations
  • Supporting SEN students
  • Looking at Benchmark 7 is particularly important as the exposure to further education will give exposure to short- or long-term opportunities.

Activity

We contacted Kidderminster College and arranged for a visit to their main college.

We had a tour of the main campus were Naomi showed the students a day in the life of a student at college, she spoke about the range of courses available and levels of entry onto courses. Naomi listened to the students interests and as a group we visited all those courses that we in practice. This was aspirational for the students as they could see how college operates and how differently it is to school. During the visit the students spoke to learners within college about their own personal experiences with attending Kidderminster College this was very inspiring and rewarding for our students to hear. We had a look around the cafeteria and we able to enjoy a little refreshment.

A student that enjoys Creative Arts and Media learning was very impressed with the college and the facilities they have on offer to support the learning through fun, engagement and professional digital media. We had access to the podcasting rooms were inspiring leaners have access to recording audio in a controlled environment, this involves planning your content, setting up equipment and optimizing the space for clear sound.

Impact of activity

Our students felt it was a real taster day and gave an opportunity for them to experience college and speak to people like them.

They felt it was something that they could aspire to, and the visit persuaded them that college might be for them.

Although a few of them doesn’t want to go to Kidderminster college, they felt it really is the right path to take in.

This has helped focus our students as they know that they need to achieve grades 3 in GCSEs or entry level in function skills for entry level so that they can attend Kidderminster College.
