Class: Year 9

Number of students: 7

Gatsby benchmarks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Jess from Nova training came in to speak to year 9’s about the next steps they can offer them when they leave school after year 11.

Qualifications

Jess put them at ease by firstly explaining that if they don’t pass their Maths and English at school, then they will have the opportunity to re-sit these in their own time, offering both GCSEs and functional skills.

Nova training is also able to help students with both work experience and work placements, which can help students:

  • Connect with local employers
  • Help them decide if the job is for them
  • Gain transferable skills
  • Build confidence
Nova training can also help students with employability including:
  • How to search for jobs
  • CV writing
  • Mock interviews
  • Budgeting
  • Apprenticeships
Jess shared some success stories with the students about young people who had gained full-time employment through apprenticeships with companies such as Company Housing.

Incentives

Jess also spoke of the incentives available to students such a lunch bursary, funding for transport, referral bonuses and payments for meeting attendance requirements and passing exams.

Student Feedback

The students listened well and spoke about the benefits throughout the day, particularly excited about the prospect of payment.
